I really enjoy collecting small, low-value items (including Wedgewood Christmas thimbles and 90s edition Goosebumps novels). I’d started accumulating protest badges attending rallies and similar events and it inspired by to start a mini collection, with vintage badges, courtesy of ebay, added alongside the contemporary ones.

This badge collection was just sitting in my jewellery drawer, and it felt like a waste not to have them on display and be able to watch the collection slowly grow, so I decided to create a banner to hang them on. I originally cut out a banner from patterned fabric, but it was just too busy, so tried again using a plain cotton and adding a tassle trim from Birmingham Rag Market.

I thought the banner needed something more, so added a ‘Bread & Roses’ design copied from a 1980 TUC poster and drawn on with posca pens.

Now, I just need to find the right spot in the house to hang this – and then slowly but surely keep adding to it.
