I’ve been meaning to make a Cocowawa Crafts Honeycomb Dress since the pattern was originally released in, I think, 2018.
Over the course of this year, I’ve had a good sort and weed of my fabric stash (which is now restricted to two tubs), and also of my digital and paper pattern stashes. It’s had the intended effect of me starting to use the fabric I already own, rather than always buying new, and also been a good reminder of which patterns I already own and still want to make. I got a bit carried away (I love a list) and I now have a long list of all of the patterns I own (with pictures) by type (dresses, tops, trousers, etc.) to reference before buying a new pattern.
Coming back to Honeycomb, I originally made the dress in a size 4-5 (grading at the waist), but found it much too large all over. I took the dress apart and trimmed down the bodice pieces to a size 3 before sewing them back together, and it now fits perfectly. I’d originally made the dress with long sleeves, but took the opportunity to swap them for short sleeves while altering the dress, to avoid feeling overwhelmed by fabric and/or bows. The only change I made to the pattern instructions was adding a couple of press studs along the button band, between the buttons, to avoid gaping.
The fabric is a cotton double gauze fabric from Higgs and Higgs, which I bought at one of the sewing shows at the NEC. The two sides of the fabric have different widths of stripe, but I kept it simple and only used the wider stripe for this dress.
I intended to make this dress for the summer and ended up being a bit late, but i’ve been wearing it out-and-about this autumn and am glad to have finally added it to my wardrobe.
