Having woven using cotton and wool yarns, I thought it would be a good next challenge to try weaving with linen yarn. I still struggle to work out the required amounts and weights of yarn for my weaving projects, and wanted to start my linen weaving with a small project, so opted to follow Amanda Rataj’s Linen Bread Bag pattern.
I substituted the recommended yarn for one which was easier to obtain in the UK, opting for Lingarn 16/2 coloured linen yarn (colourways 612 and 0005) from William Hall & Co.
I panicked that I wouldn’t have enough yarn (the linen spools look really small) so made my project narrower (17″) and shorter than the pattern recommends, but I had calculated correctly when I ordered and have plenty of yarn left over for another project.
The finished cloth still made a roomy bread bag which I’ve put to use in the kitchen. I wove a narrow band on my inkle loom using the same yarn for a drawstring, and created a channel for it at the top of the bag.
